Employment displacement in the fourth industrial revolution: torn between fear and past evidence

Luc Soete (UNU-MERIT, Maastricht University)  looks at previous industrial revolutions to get some insights on what the potential impact might be of the current fouth industrial revolution. He focuses on the attempt to provide some analytical insights into the possible consequences for work and income, primarily based on the previous, third industrial revolution; the one most closely linked to the emergence and rapid diffusion of microelectronics and the computer in the late 70’s and 80’s of the previous century.
